Philipp Trubchenko
Landscape photographer. I travel to work — twenty-three countries and something over a hundred places since 2014, from the Pamirs and the Iranian deserts to the Irish coast, and between trips the Northern California shoreline I live on.
Lake Baikal in winter took the cover of National Geographic Traveler in the Netherlands, for the Best of the World issue. Unsplash has carried the archive editorially. Individual frames have run in six languages since — Dutch, Hungarian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian and English — a good number of them in places I never submitted to, which is how photographs behave once they are out in the world.
From three hundred feet a parking lot is a pattern and the coastline is a line somebody drew. At eye level the same places are weather, and nothing else. The first is flown, the second handheld, and they are kept apart here because they ask different things of whoever is looking.
I travel light and shoot alone, usually at the ends of the day. The itinerary matters less than staying somewhere long enough for its weather to do something worth standing in.
